Marriage Rights In Islam – Abdur Rauf Shakir

This is a series of 10 lectures delivered by Sheikh Abdur Rauf Shakir on the subject of Marriage in Islam. May Allah the Exalted be pleased with him for his tremendous efforts and reward him abundantly, Aameen.

“When a man says “I accept” at a marriage ceremony he is saying I accept the responsibility of providing for my wife, loving her and protecting her. It’s called a marriage contract for a reason. Each spouse commits to fulfilling the rights of the other and to faithfully adhere to the requirements of the contract. The only difference between this contract and others is the potential for happiness, contentment and fun.”

‘Witness the love that Allah has for women; to have parents look after them when they are young, and to have husbands look after them when they are big.’ Statements similar to this can be heard in mosques throughout the world.
In marriage, Islam accords many rights to women: to earn and to spend their own money, a comfortable home to live in, intimacy, to be heard and understood — and more.
And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them – perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good An-Nisa (4:19)

In turn, women are responsible for a pleasant home for her family and leading their husbands on the path of piety, among many other obligations.
