A Guide to Living The Good Life

Lessons From The Life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

A lesson on leadership, love, and compassion.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not just a leader but a compassionate and empathetic individual who had a way about him of making others feel valued and respected. His companions were drawn to him not only because of his wisdom and guidance but also because of the way he made them feel.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was beloved by others because of the genuine love and care they felt he had for them when they were around him. This is a quality that he perfected and embodied.

One of the companions, Amr bin Al-Aas, was a very intelligent man, a leader in his own right. He was appointed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  to take charge of an army of 300-500 men at the Syrian borders. He was a shrewd military commander leading to some of the fastest wins in the early Muslim conquests.

The Prophet ﷺ spoke of him in high regard, praised him, and entrusted him. So much so that after returning from one of his expeditions, he felt the need to ask Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ ‘Which people do you love most?’ He replied, `Aisha.’ Amr bin Al-Aas then said, ‘No, From amongst the men?’ He replied, ‘Her father (Abu Bakr As-Sadiq).’ He then said, ‘Whom (do you love) next?’ He replied,” `Umar.’ Then he counted the names of many men. Amr bin Al-Aas then became silent for fear that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ might regard him as being the last of them.

– Sahih al-Bukhari 4358 & Sahih Muslim 2384

This hadith teaches us that the Prophet ﷺ had a special love for all of his companions, and he made them feel valued and respected. Amr bin Al-Aas wasn’t ranked as being top on the list, but this is rather trivial competition. The lesson is that the Prophet ﷺ showed a deep love and appreciation for all His companions to the point you would think you’re his favorite.

Reflection:

The value of feeling valued – how can we make those around us feel more valued, respected, and loved?
